Don't read reviews
I've discovered I no longer care what other people think of a game. No matter how good a game is, there will always be those who get off on hating what is popular, or don't like anything that is like their favourite game.
Take Final Fantasy XII. Even though I'm only 11 hours in, I find it to be wonderfully done. Everything from the voice acting to the license system makes for a quality experience. Even though that is my opinion of the game, it must speak somewhat for the actual quality of the game itself.
Then there are those who think it's bad because it differs so much from the other Final Fantasy's in the past, or because it's too this, that or the other. Yes, they are more than welcome to their opinion of the game, and if they honest think it's that way, they don't have to play it.
Now the people who hate it because it IS such a high quality game write negative reviews because they enjoy watching the reactions from people who poo poo their "opinion". They can often be found reading message boards quitely reading the disent they start. Bastards!
What this rant boils down to is don't let reviews decide what you should watch/read/play. If you think it sounds interesting, give it a try! For all forms of media, there is an outlet to get it for much less than the buying price: libraries and video stores. Spend $6 and 2 days on a game rental and see how much you like it. If you do, buy it and enjoy it for that much longer. If you don't, it only cost you $6 to find that out. Borrowing books from the library is even cheaper.
Oh, and if you are unsure of if you will like a game or not, and if I know you, ask me. I will give the run down based on what I know of your tastes and if you'll like it or not.
Final word: reviews = evil, games = yummy!
