My Favourite Style
So, I really like the Art Deco style. Don't know why, but I do. Games that use this however are even better. Two that come to mind are Bioshock and LA Noire. The former came out at the end of summer, 2007. The latter has yet to come out, but should be by end of 2009, and I hope it doesn't become vaporware.
I remember when I first played Bioshock. I had just gotten my 360 and only had the couple of games that came with it. Marvel Ultimate Alliance didn't interest me at all, despite my love of Marvel, and Forza Motorsport 2 was a racing game that would have eventually required skills to master I wasn't willing to develop. I started going through all the demos and arcade games available and downloaded everything that even looked remotely interesting.
I came across Bioshock and thought I'd give it a try. Now I don't watch horror movies, and I've only played a couple horror games, and FPS's aren't really my thing, but this was different! The style, the excellent voice acting, the gameplay, everything stood out and melded together to make a great game, and I only got to play the first 45 minutes of the game. But play it I did, a few time, each time taking my time, exploring every nook and cranny, until I knew I had to get it. Few weeks later I did, and it is awesome. Unfortunately, it suffered from the same curse all my games do and that's losing interested 1/4 of the way though. I'll come back to it, eventually, and it'll be awesome again!
So the LA Noire game doesn't take place in an undersea city against self mutilated psychopaths (not unless it's LA in the distant future, hmmmm). Nope, you're back in the 40's and art deco is every where! I don't know much about it yet, but it seems to similar to another game I enjoyed a lot, Hotel Dusk, and not just because of the film noir style, but playing the roll of a detective. Some day I'll be able to play it and someday I'll post about it here, and how I've gotten past the intro sequence and shelved the game, but until then, I can only dream.
